What are Nerve Compression Syndromes?
Nerve compression syndromes (entrapment neuropathies) occur when a peripheral nerve is compressed, causing pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the distribution of that nerve. At Dashvanth Healthcare Delhi, our neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons provide comprehensive nerve entrapment diagnosis and treatment.
Common Nerve Compression Syndromes
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Median nerve compression at the wrist. Most common entrapment neuropathy. Causes numbness in thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers, and hand weakness.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Ulnar nerve compression at the elbow. Causes numbness in little finger and half of ring finger, intrinsic hand muscle weakness.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Compression of brachial plexus or subclavian vessels between collarbone and first rib. Causes arm pain, numbness, weakness.
Meralgia Paraesthetica
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve compression at the inguinal ligament. Causes outer thigh numbness and pain.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tibial nerve compression behind medial malleolus. Causes heel and foot burning pain and numbness – the foot equivalent of carpal tunnel.
Diagnosis
Clinical examination, Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) – confirm diagnosis and localise compression, Ultrasound – shows nerve swelling at compression site, MRI for complex cases.
Treatment
Conservative
- Activity modification and ergonomic adjustments
- Splinting and bracing
- NSAIDs and nerve pain medications
- Physiotherapy
- Corticosteroid injections
Surgical
Nerve decompression/release surgery for cases not responding to conservative management. Minimally invasive endoscopic approaches available for carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes.
