Common Skin Rashes in Children

Common Childhood Rashes
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Chronic itchy skin condition, very common in infants and young children. Red, dry, scaly patches on face, elbows, knees. Managed with moisturisers and topical steroids.
Heat Rash (Miliaria)
Tiny red bumps from blocked sweat glands – extremely common in Delhi summers. Resolves with cooling measures and light clothing.
Urticaria (Hives)
Itchy, raised, pink welts that appear and disappear quickly. Often allergic trigger (food, medication, infection). Treated with antihistamines.
Chickenpox (Varicella)
Itchy blisters in different stages all over body, fever. Prevented by vaccination. Treated with calamine lotion, antihistamines, and aciclovir in severe cases.
Measles
High fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, then characteristic rash from face downward 3-4 days later. Koplik spots inside mouth pathognomonic. Prevented by MMR vaccine.
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
Sores in mouth, blisters on hands, feet and buttocks. Caused by Coxsackievirus. Self-limiting, symptomatic treatment only.
Tinea (Ringworm)
Fungal infection causing ring-shaped scaly patches. Treated with topical antifungals.
Warning Signs Requiring Urgent Assessment
- Petechiae or purpura (non-blanching rash) – could indicate meningococcal disease
- Widespread blistering rash (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
- Rash with high fever and unwell child
- Rapidly spreading rash
