Thyroid Disorders in India

Hypothyroidism
Underactive thyroid. Cause: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune, most common), iodine deficiency, post-radioiodine/surgery. Symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, depression, slow heart rate, irregular periods. Treatment: Levothyroxine (T4 replacement), start low dose, titrate to TSH 1–2.5 mIU/L.
Hyperthyroidism
Overactive thyroid. Cause: Graves’ disease (autoimmune), toxic multinodular goitre, thyroiditis. Symptoms: weight loss, heat intolerance, palpitations, tremors, anxiety, diarrhoea, bulging eyes (Graves’). Treatment: antithyroid drugs (carbimazole, propylthiouracil), radioiodine, or surgery.
Thyroid in Pregnancy
Critical: uncontrolled thyroid disease causes miscarriage, preterm birth, and developmental problems. All pregnant women need TSH checked in first trimester. Target TSH < 2.5 mIU/L in first trimester.
