Vitamin D Test: Why Every Delhi Resident Should Check Their Levels

By Dashvanth Healthcare Medical Team Β· Reviewed by our specialists Β· East Delhi

The Delhi Vitamin D Paradox

Delhi receives abundant sunlight, yet 70–90% of its residents are Vitamin D deficient. This is one of the most important unrecognised health issues in the city β€” Vitamin D deficiency is linked to bone loss, muscle weakness, recurrent infections, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

The Test: 25-OH Vitamin D

The correct test is serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH Vit D or calcidiol). NOT the active form (1,25-dihydroxy Vitamin D) β€” this is a different, more expensive test used only for specific medical conditions.

Reference Ranges

  • Deficient: Below 20 ng/mL (<50 nmol/L)
  • Insufficient: 20–29 ng/mL
  • Sufficient: 30–100 ng/mL
  • Toxic: Above 150 ng/mL (rare with supplements)

Who Should Be Tested?

  • People with bone pain, muscle weakness, or fatigue
  • Recurrent fractures or osteoporosis
  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Autoimmune conditions (thyroid, RA, IBD)
  • Depression or mood disorders
  • Obesity (Vitamin D stored in fat, less bioavailable)
  • Dark skin + indoor lifestyle (highest risk)

Supplementation Guide

  • Mild deficiency (20–30 ng/mL): 2000 IU/day
  • Moderate deficiency (10–20 ng/mL): 4000 IU/day
  • Severe deficiency (<10 ng/mL): Stoss therapy β€” 60,000 IU weekly for 8–12 weeks, then maintenance
  • Recheck after 3 months

Can I take too much Vitamin D?

Vitamin D toxicity (hypercalcaemia) is rare and requires extremely high doses (>10,000 IU/day for months). Standard supplementation at 2000–4000 IU/day is safe for adults. Always check levels before and after high-dose therapy.
