Brain Tumour Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

By Dashvanth Healthcare Medical Team Β· Reviewed by our specialists Β· East Delhi

Understanding Brain Tumours

Brain tumours can be primary (starting in the brain) or secondary/metastatic (spreading from elsewhere). They are classified as benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Early detection significantly improves outcomes.

Common Warning Signs

Headaches

Brain tumour headaches are often worst in the morning (increased intracranial pressure when lying flat), worsen progressively, and are associated with nausea or vomiting. A new headache pattern or a headache that is "the worst of your life" warrants urgent evaluation.

Seizures

A first-ever seizure in an adult (especially after age 30) requires brain imaging to exclude a tumour. The type of seizure can point to tumour location.

Neurological Deficits

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Vision disturbances (double vision, field defects)
  • Speech difficulties β€” slurred speech or word-finding problems
  • Balance and coordination problems
  • Hearing loss (acoustic neuroma)

Cognitive and Personality Changes

Memory problems, confusion, personality change, or mood disturbance β€” especially if new and progressive β€” can indicate a frontal or temporal lobe tumour.

Diagnosis

MRI brain with gadolinium contrast is the standard investigation. CT scan is faster in emergencies. Biopsy confirms the tumour type β€” essential for treatment planning.

Treatment

  • Surgery (craniotomy or keyhole): primary treatment for accessible tumours
  • Radiotherapy: adjuvant or definitive for certain tumours
  • Chemotherapy (e.g., temozolomide for glioblastoma)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife): for small/deep tumours

Are all brain tumours fatal?

No β€” benign tumours (meningioma, pituitary adenoma, acoustic neuroma) are often curable with surgery. Malignant tumours carry variable prognosis depending on grade and type.
