Knee Pain in Young Adults: Causes & Solutions

By Dashvanth Healthcare Medical Team Β· Reviewed by our specialists Β· East Delhi

Why Do Young Adults Get Knee Pain?

Knee pain in people under 40 is often different from the osteoarthritis common in older adults. Young people more frequently have patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscal tears from sports, overuse injuries, and cartilage defects.

Common Causes in Young Adults

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee)

Pain around the kneecap (patella) aggravated by stairs, squats, and prolonged sitting. Caused by malalignment, muscle imbalance, or overtraining. Treated with physiotherapy focusing on VMO strengthening and hip stabilisation.

Meniscal Tear

Torn meniscus from twisting injury causes pain, clicking, and locking. Arthroscopy for repair (not removal) is preferred in young patients to preserve joint health long-term.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease (Teens)

Pain and swelling below the knee in growing adolescents during growth spurts. Usually resolves with rest and activity modification.

Chondromalacia Patellae

Softening and damage to the cartilage under the kneecap. Treated conservatively β€” rarely needs surgery.

Is it normal to have knee pain at 25?

Not normal but common. Knee pain in young adults deserves evaluation β€” early diagnosis prevents minor issues from becoming major cartilage or joint problems.

Can I exercise with knee pain?

Yes, with guidance. Low-impact exercise (swimming, cycling) and targeted strengthening are beneficial. High-impact activities should be modified until the cause is identified.
