Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, making it prone to injury. Common causes include rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), shoulder impingement, AC joint arthritis, and labral tears.

Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff β€” four muscles stabilising the shoulder β€” can tear from acute injury or gradual degeneration. Symptoms: pain reaching overhead, weakness, night pain. Treatment ranges from physiotherapy to arthroscopic repair depending on tear size.

Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)

Characterised by progressive stiffness and pain in all shoulder movements, frozen shoulder passes through three phases: freezing (painful), frozen (stiff), and thawing (improving). Treatment: physiotherapy, corticosteroid injections, and in resistant cases, arthroscopic capsular release.

When to See a Doctor Urgently

  • Sudden severe pain after a fall or accident
  • Visible deformity of the shoulder
  • Complete inability to lift the arm
  • Pain, swelling and redness (possible infection or inflammatory arthritis)
  • Radiating pain down the arm with numbness (cervical spine involvement)

How long does frozen shoulder last?

Untreated frozen shoulder can last 1–3 years. With physiotherapy and injections, most patients recover in 6–12 months. Surgery speeds recovery in resistant cases.

Can shoulder pain be from the neck?

Yes β€” cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis) commonly causes referred shoulder and arm pain. Your doctor will examine both regions and may request an MRI of the cervical spine.
