Why Monitor Blood Pressure at Home?
Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is now recommended for all patients with hypertension. It eliminates “white coat hypertension” (BP that is high only in the doctor’s office), helps detect masked hypertension, and allows better treatment monitoring. At Dashvanth Healthcare Delhi, we guide patients on effective home BP monitoring.
Choosing a BP Monitor
- Upper arm monitors are more accurate than wrist monitors
- Choose a validated device (BHS, ESH, or AAMI validated)
- Automatic (digital) monitors are easier to use
- Ensure the cuff size fits your arm correctly (wrong size = inaccurate readings)
- Recommended brands: Omron, Beurer, A&D Medical
Correct Measurement Technique
- Rest quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
- Sit with back supported, feet flat on floor
- Rest arm on a flat surface at heart level
- Cuff should be on bare skin, not over clothing
- Do not talk during measurement
- Take 2 readings, 1–2 minutes apart – record the average
- Measure at the same times daily (morning before medication, evening)
What Readings Mean at Home
- Normal: Below 130/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 130–135/80–85 mmHg – monitor closely
- Hypertension: Consistently above 135/85 mmHg – see doctor
- Emergency: Above 180/120 mmHg with symptoms – immediate medical care
Keeping Records
Keep a BP diary: date, time, readings, medications taken, any symptoms. Share this with your doctor at every visit.
