Delhi Air Pollution – A Health Emergency
Delhi consistently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities. Air quality index (AQI) levels often reach “hazardous” during winter months (October–February). At Dashvanth Healthcare Delhi, we see many patients affected by air pollution-related health problems.
Types of Air Pollutants
- PM2.5 (Fine particles <2.5 microns): Most dangerous – penetrate deep into lungs and bloodstream
- PM10 (Coarse particles): Cause respiratory irritation
- NO2, SO2, Ozone: Toxic gases causing lung and heart damage
- Carbon monoxide: Reduces oxygen delivery to tissues
Health Effects of Air Pollution
- Exacerbation of asthma and COPD
- Increased risk of lung cancer
- Cardiovascular disease and stroke
- Premature birth and low birth weight
- Cognitive impairment in children
- Chronic respiratory diseases
Symptoms During High AQI Days
- Irritation of eyes, nose, throat
- Coughing, wheezing, breathlessness
- Chest tightness
- Headache
- Worsening of pre-existing conditions
Protective Measures
- N95/P100 masks: Most effective against PM2.5
- Stay indoors on high AQI days (AQI >200)
- Air purifiers: HEPA filter for bedrooms
- Exercise: Move indoor exercise on bad days
- Medications: Ensure asthma/COPD medications are adequate
- Check AQI daily: Use SAFAR-Air or AQI.in apps
