Antibiotic Resistance – A Global Crisis
Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to global health. India is the largest consumer of antibiotics in the world, and antibiotic-resistant infections cause millions of deaths annually. At Dashvanth Healthcare Delhi, responsible antibiotic prescribing is central to our practice.
What is Antibiotic Resistance?
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria evolve mechanisms to survive antibiotic treatment. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics – taking them unnecessarily, not completing courses, using wrong antibiotics – accelerates this process.
Why Self-Medicating with Antibiotics is Harmful
- Viral infections don’t respond to antibiotics: Common cold, flu, COVID-19, most sore throats and coughs are viral
- Creates resistance: Exposing bacteria to subtherapeutic or unnecessary antibiotic doses breeds resistance
- Side effects: Diarrhoea, allergic reactions, C. difficile infection, antibiotic-associated colitis
- Disrupts gut microbiome: Kills beneficial bacteria, causing digestive and immune problems
- Masks serious conditions: May partially treat serious infections, delaying proper diagnosis
When Are Antibiotics Genuinely Needed?
- Proven bacterial infections (confirmed by culture when possible)
- Streptococcal tonsillitis (confirmed by strep test)
- Urinary tract infections
- Pneumonia, skin infections, wound infections
- NOT for: common cold, most coughs, viral fever, flu
How to Use Antibiotics Responsibly
- Only take antibiotics prescribed by a doctor
- Always complete the full prescribed course
- Never share antibiotics or use leftover ones
- Store properly (not in bathroom/kitchen humidity)
