- Duration: 5–7 days for fever, but tiredness 2–3 weeks
Treatment
For Both Cold and Flu
- Rest and adequate fluids
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and pain
- Saline nasal drops for congestion (very effective in infants)
- Honey for cough (children >1 year only) – proven effective
- Steam inhalation for older children
Important: No Cough Medicines Under Age 6
Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are NOT recommended for children under 6 years due to lack of efficacy and risk of side effects.
For Flu: Antivirals
Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) – effective if started within 48 hours of flu onset. Recommended for high-risk children.
Prevention
- Annual influenza vaccination
- Regular handwashing with soap
