CBC Parameters Explained
Red Blood Cell (RBC) Parameters
- Haemoglobin (Hb): Protein carrying oxygen. Normal: Men 13–17 g/dL, Women 12–15 g/dL, Children vary by age. Low = anaemia.
- Haematocrit (PCV): % of blood volume that is red cells. Normal: Men 40–52%, Women 36–48%.
- MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume): Size of RBCs. Low = iron deficiency or thalassaemia. High = B12/folate deficiency.
- MCH/MCHC: Haemoglobin content of RBCs.
- RBC Count: Number of red cells per microlitre.
White Blood Cell (WBC) Parameters
- Total WBC Count: Normal 4,000–11,000/μL. High = infection/inflammation. Very high = leukaemia.
- Differential Count: Neutrophils (bacterial infection), Lymphocytes (viral infection), Eosinophils (allergy/parasites), Monocytes, Basophils.
Platelet Parameters
- Platelet Count: Normal 150,000–400,000/μL. Low (thrombocytopenia) = dengue, ITP, aplastic anaemia. High (thrombocytosis) = infection, iron deficiency.
