Dengue Testing in Delhi

Types of Dengue Tests

NS1 Antigen Test (Days 1–5)

  • Best test in the first 5 days of fever
  • Detects dengue virus protein directly
  • Highly specific for dengue
  • Positive: Confirms active dengue infection

Dengue IgM Antibody (Days 4–14)

  • Indicates recent dengue infection
  • Becomes positive 4–5 days after fever onset
  • Remains positive for 3 months

Dengue IgG Antibody

  • Indicates past infection or secondary dengue
  • Positive IgG with positive IgM = secondary dengue (higher risk of severe disease)

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

  • Monitor platelet count and haematocrit
  • Platelet count below 100,000 = dengue warning
  • Rising haematocrit = plasma leakage (severe dengue)
  • Repeat CBC every 24 hours when platelets falling

When to Test

  • Fever for 2+ days during or after monsoon in Delhi
  • Fever with severe headache, eye pain, rash, or joint pains
  • Fever with low platelet count
