What is a Brain Haemorrhage?

Types of Brain Haemorrhage
- Intracerebral Haemorrhage (ICH): Bleeding within the brain tissue. Often due to hypertension.
- Subarachnoid Haemorrhage (SAH): Bleeding in the space around the brain. Often from aneurysm rupture.
- Subdural Haematoma: Blood between the brain and inner brain lining. Often from trauma.
- Epidural Haematoma: Blood between the skull and outer brain lining. Surgical emergency.
Warning Signs – Act FAST
- F – Face drooping: Sudden facial weakness or numbness
- A – Arm weakness: Sudden arm or leg weakness
- S – Speech: Slurred or difficulty speaking/understanding
- T – Time: Call emergency services immediately
Other warning signs: sudden severe headache (“worst headache of life”), sudden vision loss, sudden confusion, loss of balance.
Diagnosis
Non-contrast CT scan is the emergency investigation of choice. MRI brain, CT angiography/MR angiography to identify aneurysms or AVMs.

Surgical Management
- Craniotomy and haematoma evacuation: For large intracerebral haematomas
- Aneurysm clipping: Open surgery to clip the aneurysm
- Endovascular coiling: Minimally invasive catheter-based aneurysm treatment
- Decompressive craniectomy: Removing part of skull to relieve pressure
Recovery After Brain Haemorrhage
