Understanding Brain Tumours
A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain or surrounding structures. Brain tumours can be primary (originating in the brain) or secondary (metastatic, spreading from elsewhere). Dr Simranjeet Singh (M.Ch Neurosurgery, AIIMS) at Dashvanth Healthcare Delhi is an expert in brain tumour diagnosis and surgical treatment.
Types of Brain Tumours
Primary Brain Tumours
- Gliomas (40–50%): Glioblastoma (GBM), astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma
- Meningiomas (20–30%): Usually benign, arise from brain coverings
- Pituitary Adenomas: Hormone-secreting or non-secreting
- Acoustic Neuromas (Vestibular Schwannomas): Arise from hearing nerve
- Primary CNS Lymphomas
Secondary (Metastatic) Brain Tumours
Most common brain tumours in adults, originating from lung, breast, kidney, colon, or melanoma spreading to the brain.
Symptoms of Brain Tumour
- Headaches – often worse in the morning
- Seizures in a person with no prior history
- Cognitive changes, memory problems, personality changes
- Weakness or numbness in arm or leg
- Speech difficulties
- Vision problems
- Nausea and vomiting (from raised intracranial pressure)
Diagnosis
MRI brain with contrast (most important investigation), CT scan, MR Spectroscopy, PET scan for metabolic activity, and tissue biopsy for definitive diagnosis.
Treatment
Surgery
Craniotomy for tumour removal is the primary treatment. Extent of safe resection depends on tumour location and proximity to eloquent brain areas. Awake craniotomy is used for tumours in speech or motor areas.
Radiotherapy
After surgery for malignant tumours. Stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife) for small or residual tumours.
Chemotherapy
Temozolomide for glioblastoma. Targeted therapies based on molecular markers.
